Conservation

A conservation area is defined as an ‘area of special architectural or historic interest'. Belgrave Terrace and the neighbouring Victorian terraced streets became a conservation area on the 12th August 1971. Sowerby has managed to retain a few of its timber- framed buildings providing evidence of its medieval past. Sowerby’s fortunes rose during the Georgian and Victorian period and many of it's terraced houses and villas date from 1856 to 1871 when Belgrave Terrace was constructed. Belgrave Terrace lacks a conventional front street that is neither accessed either from the rear service area or from the footpaths at the front of the house. This arrangement produces a uniquely private character and a set of open plan gardens & houses of national architectural significance.

" As soon as we moved in during the summer of 2006 we’ve worked hard to reveal and to reinstate many of its original features. Thankfully all the original windows and door frames are still part of this expansive and elegant house "
